The North East Victoria Railway
This will be the title page about the NEVR and its extended fictional story included subsidiary companies such as the Victorian Consolidated Ore Company and Eastern Hardwoods timber organisation.
The North East Victoria Railway is of course a fiction of my imagination. Aiming to set up a private railway to exploit Victorias riches a group of investors travelled Europe on a fact finding mission after hearing about the virtues of narrow gauge and after seeing the Norwegian 3'6" system they were convinced that this would be the easiest way to conquer Victorias rich North east corner, supplying goldmining towns with equipment and supplies and allowing vast tracts of good hardwood and minerals to be extracted. Their first push from 1858 was to run from what is now Port Melbourne up the Yarra to Healesville opening swathes of area for farmland and delivering supplies to the area around Warrendyte assisting with gold mining efforts there. The first train would run 1861. The new company knew that private companies building their own lines wouldn't last and they also knew they would have to build fast to beat the government if they wanted to own the lines to the north. For this early traffic Beyer Peacock were engaged and produced a group of locomotives that were extremely similar to what was ordered for Norway. Some local experimental types and other assorted imports were also built around this time but not much data from those early days survives. The next group of locomotives were built for the push through the mountains. The line would cut through to Marysville, Alexandra, Bonnie Doon to Wangaratta and then there would be a spiders web of lines around the top corner to Bright, Whitfield, Beechworth, Cudgewa and Wodonga. Of course the VR would open a much flatter and faster route via Seymour which would take away most of the main interstate traffic in time and ensured the NEVR would always be a struggling local concern.
Traffic was good enough to get by particularly until after world war two but as with most railways the advent of the motor car seriously ate into traffic. Luckily the NEVRs early suburban lines to Hurstbridge, Lilydale and Glen Waverly along with its inner suburban System helped keep it afloat. Despite best efforts to dieselise early Clyde could not fulfill orders and Modern Steam such as the Beyer Peacock W classes and 400 Class Garratts helped ease the pain until steam could be retired. Even after Dieselisation began budget constraints meant that there were only limited numbers available and eventually complete phase out of the steam locomotives was only achieved once diesels from other systems such as the Alco 830 class and QR 1300/AN ZC class were purchased as stop gaps. Electrification through the mountains was always a pipe dream but to this day has never been achieved. The current fleet has large numbers of EMD Export G8 and G12 models in rebuilt and un-rebuilt forms which suffices for the meagre goods traffic still on offer.
Early on the company set in stone a policy of repeat ordering other railways successful designs and to that end in the following tables they will have their NEVR number if applicable and what they were an order of.
Locomotives from the Connecting VCOC and EH companies are also listed along with any rollingstock from other industrial or preserved railways. This page is subject to change as more information becomes available
